Valentine's Day Nail Art: Negative Space Heart Tutorial

Hey guys! With Valentine's Day coming up this weekend I thought I'd do a mani befitting the occasion, and I decided on this negative space heart design that was inspired by @sloteazzy on Instagram. These were done using a combination of nail vinyls and free-hand painting, but these could be easily recreated using heart-shaped stickers or stencils if free-hand scares you a bit! Read my tutorial below to see how I created this design :)

What I Used:

- OPI Ridge Filler Base Coat
- OPI Act Your Beige
- OPI Romantically Involved
- HK Girl Glisten and Glow Top Coat
- Striping brush from bornprettystore
- Single chevron nail vinyls from nailvinyls.com
- Tweezers
- Nail polish remover and cleanup brush

1. Apply a base coat to protect your natural nails from stains and provide a smooth base for polish.

2. Paint your nails 1-2 coats of a sheer or nude polish and allow to dry completely. You can apply a fast-drying top coat to speed up this process.

3. Once your base is completely dry, position your chevron vinyl (or you can make a 'V' shape out of striping tape) about half a centimeter down from the tip of your nail, making sure that it is centered and that the point of the 'V' is facing the tip edge.

4. Depending on how big you want your heart to be, paint an 'm' shape with a small nail art brush and a red polish about half way to three quarters of the way down your nail, making sure to leave some space between your heart shape and the cuticle. Fill in the nail between your 'm' shape and the cuticle with red polish, and also fill in the area between the vinyl/tape and the tip of your nail, being careful not to go over the line of your vinyl/tape.

5. While the polish is still wet, carefully remove your vinyl/tape with tweezers or your fingers to reveal the nice crisp heart shape. If some polish managed to leak under, take a cleanup brush dipped in some polish remover and tidy up the lines.

6. Finish your design with a top coat and clean up around your cuticles with remover and cottonbuds or a brush.

When it comes to nail art, I definitely think sometimes less is more! I found it quite refreshing to do a simple and clean design for once, and I hope you do too. If you try these out for yourself, let me know on Facebook or Instagram, or simply comment at the bottom of this post. Thanks for reading, and I'll see you next time!
